The Odyssey

I didn't see this movie in 70mm IMAX. One of the few theatres that has a realMax screen is in San Francisco ( AMC Metreon ), but I was too excited about this movie coming out that I just saw it in standard AMC laser. Odysseus is truly him in this movie. Nolan does an amazing job of portraying the weight of Odysseus' name. My favorite scenes in the movie are the story of the Trojan Horse told by Menelaus, the scene with the dog for his homecoming, and the Laestrygonians. Honestly, it would be hard to mess this up; its like Nolan has so much content to work with its actually amazing he managed to tell a story that feels complete. Here are some of my criticisms of the movie. 1. The script/casting/acting - For some scenes of the movie, I felt like tone and delivery of the lines were very robotic; and the conversation between characters didn't flow naturally. I remember noticing this distinctly at some points. Also, maybe my listening comprehension is bad but I couldn't understand some of the lines at the beginning of the movie. I think someone who did an amazing job and deserves MVP is Menelaus. Also Robert Pattinson is awesome. Tom Holland, go back to playing spider guy. 2. Some parts could have been done better. I swear the biggest climax of the movie took like an hour to happen. Odysseus is finally home and is about to see his wife that has been holding it down for 10 years, but from the moment hes like in the same room as her to the moment that she realizes its him, there is a long battle scene with some minion suitors that just didn't need to happen. I wish Odysseus would have just ran into Penelope's arms and there was like a grand kiss scene and everything woudl have been awesome; but the buildup just didn't pay off. I also wish we got to hear more about some of the adventures, like the sirens and the giants and the dead; some parts just felt a bit rushed and I wish they played with some more complex themes instead of battle battle battle ocean ocean row death. Even though I have these things I hold against the movie, I think it was one of the most enjoyable films to watch in my life. I mean, the legend of the story of Odysseus combined with the triumphant and flawless pictures of Nolan is like the most perfect juicy combo ever. I'm probably going to watch it again in 70mm once the hype dies down.
